A self-contain or mini flat shared between two people has the same problem every time: there is plenty of room, it is just all in the wrong dimension. The floor is full and the walls are empty.
Here are ten fixes that work in Nigerian rooms specifically, ordered from cheapest to most involved.
1. Go vertical before you go anywhere
Most rooms have a metre and a half of unused wall above head height. Tall open shelving, stacked crates, or a simple timber unit built to the ceiling turns dead air into storage without taking another inch of floor.
In a shared room, tall units double as the room divider, which is two problems solved with one purchase.
2. Use the space under the bed properly
Not by shoving things under it loosely — that is where dust and mosquitoes live. Use flat, lidded boxes on castors, or raise the bed on blocks to create a proper drawer height.
Keep this for low-frequency things: out-of-season clothes, documents, spare bedding.
3. Hooks and rails on every door
The back of a door is free real estate. Over-door hooks for bags and towels, a rail for shoes, a hanging organiser for small items. Nothing drilled, nothing that affects your caution deposit.
4. Ghana-must-go, but organised
They are cheap, indestructible and everyone already has three. The trick is labelling them and stacking them somewhere deliberate rather than letting them migrate around the room. For seasonal storage they beat expensive containers.
5. Get the kitchen off the counter
In a self-contain the cooking corner is the first thing to collapse into chaos. A wall-mounted rack for pots, a magnetic strip for knives, hanging baskets for onions and tomatoes. Anything off the surface gives you back the only workspace you have.
Tomatoes and onions also last longer hanging in air than sealed in a bag, which matters when you are buying in bulk to save money.
6. A trunk or ottoman that you sit on
One object, two jobs. Storage inside, seating on top, and a surface when someone visits. In a room with no sitting room, this is the single most useful piece of furniture you can buy.

7. Protect what you store from damp and heat
This is the Lagos-specific one that generic guides miss. Clothes and documents stored badly do not just get untidy, they get mouldy in the rainy season.
- Keep boxes off bare floors — a pallet, blocks or castors.
- Do not store against a wall that gets damp. Check for stains before you commit a shelf to that side.
- Leave air gaps between stacked items.
- Electronics and documents in sealed boxes with a sachet of silica if you can get it.
8. Own the wardrobe division honestly
If you are sharing one wardrobe, split it by the metre and say so out loud on day one. Uneven hanging space discovered gradually is a genuine source of resentment.
Then add capacity rather than fighting over it: a freestanding rail costs little and solves the whole argument.
9. One in, one out
The only storage rule that works long term. In a small shared room, every new thing has to displace something. Agree it as a household rule, not a personal virtue.
Agree also what is allowed to live in common space at all — the fastest way a shared self-contain becomes unlivable is two people each leaving "just one thing" out.
10. Fix nothing permanently without asking
Before you drill anything, remember section 7(5) of the Tenancy Law of Lagos State 2011: a tenant shall not make alterations or additions without the landlord's written consent. Built-in shelving, wall-mounted racks and anything screwed into blockwork counts.
Two practical consequences. First, prefer freestanding and tension-fitted solutions on a one-year tenancy — they move with you and cost you nothing on exit. Second, if you do want something fixed, get the consent in writing, because under section 6(2) improvements made with the landlord's previous written consent can be claimed as compensation when you leave.
And photograph the walls before you start. When the caution deposit is settled, the difference between "damage" and "reasonable wear and tear" is whatever you can prove.
The real fix, if the room is simply too small
Storage tricks buy you maybe twenty per cent. If two adults genuinely cannot live in the space, no shelf solves that.
At that point run the comparison honestly: a self-contain shared between two, against a room each in a two-bedroom split between two. Because agency, legal and caution are charged on the property rather than per tenant, the bigger flat is often closer in price than people expect.
